This makes foreign exchange one of the least volatile existing financial markets. Starting in the forex market often results in a life cycle that involves diving in head first, giving up, or taking a step back to do more research and open a demo account to practice. From there, new traders may feel more confident to open another live account, experience more success, break even, or turn a profit. That is why it’s important to build a framework for trading in the forex markets, which we outline below.
How Volatile Is the Forex Market?

Study the markets.
You should keep in mind that there are as many currency pairs as there are currencies in the world. The total number of existing currency pairs changes alongside the currencies that come and go. If you decide to buy a currency pair, you are buying the base currency and will be selling the quoted currency. Meanwhile, when you sell the currency pair, you will be selling the base currency and will be receiving the quote currency.
What is a Currency Pair?
You’ll often see the terms FX, forex, foreign exchange market, and currency market. Currencies are traded worldwide in the major financial centers of Frankfurt, Hong Kong, London, New York, Paris, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, and Zurich—across almost every time zone. This means the forex market begins in Tokyo and Hong Kong when the U.S. trading day ends. The forex market can be highly active at any time, with price quotes changing constantly. Experts suggest trying a combination of both fundamental and technical analysis in order to make long-term projections and determine short-term entry and exit points.
Commercial and investment banks still conduct most of the trading in forex markets on behalf of their clients. But there are also opportunities for professional and individual investors to trade one currency against another. Currency trading was very difficult for individual investors until it made its way onto the internet. Most currency traders were large multinational corporations, hedge funds, or high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) because forex trading required a lot of capital.

For example, less leverage (and therefore less risk) may be preferable for highly volatile (exotic) currency pairs. The downfall of learning forex trading with a demo account alone is that you don’t get to experience what it’s like to have your hard-earned money on the line. Although the spot market is commonly known as one that deals with transactions in the present (rather than in the future), these trades take two days to settle. Spot foreign exchange is the outright exchange of one currency for another at the time of the trade for a specific exchange rate. Spot FX trades typically settle with the actual exchange of currencies at the rate traded two days after the trade. There are some exceptions to the spot plus two-day settlement, most notably USD/CAD (US dollar vs. Canadian dollar) which settles one day after the trade date. Line charts are used to identify big-picture trends for a currency. They are the most basic and common type of chart used by forex traders. They display the closing trading price for a currency for the periods specified by the user. The trend lines identified in a line chart can be used to devise trading strategies. For example, you can use the information in a trend line to identify breakouts or a change in trend for rising or declining prices.
Markets are unpredictable, liquidity can swing up and down, and sudden news announcements can cause significant market shifts. Because forex prices are quoted in pips (hundredths of a cent), prices can change hundreds of times per minute. The more precision you can bake into your trading strategy, the less you’ll have to think about on a day-to-day, trade-by-trade basis. You won’t have to make as many mental calculations when actively trading if you’ve done the work ahead of time. Anyone can make money in the forex market, but it requires patience and following a well-defined strategy. Therefore, it’s important to first approach forex trading through a careful, medium-term strategy so that you can avoid larger players and becoming a casualty of this market.
The currency pair will indicate the amount of the quote currency you’ll need in order to purchase one unit of the base currency. Just because a trading strategy is simple or rudimentary doesn’t mean it’s bad, just as sophisticated strategies aren’t guaranteed to be successful. Additionally, the size of the market also acts as an obstacle, making it impossible even for the large players such as the central bank to manipulate the currency prices. It boasts a fast-paced market that sees trades being completed left and right without the hassle of needing to meet each other in person. That said, the legality of forex trading can vary from country to country. Some countries, like Pakistan and Malaysia, may offer physical currency exchange, but options for retail spot forex trading are limited. Brokers will also provide technical and fundamental information, economic calendars, and other extensive research.
With the largest banks making up a large share of the market, prices can fluctuate greatly during the day. While this volatility and price action appeals to many traders, the price swings involved also add to the risk of getting stopped out of positions and experiencing slippage on price fills. The most basic forms of forex trades are long and short trades, with the price changes reported as pips, points, and ticks.
